Carlos Creek Winery joined wineries both near and far for the 2022 International Cold Climate Wine Competition held on Friday, May 6. This competition is held annually to honor and promote wines of exceptional quality grown and produced in cold-climate regions. This year our very own Head Winemaker, Russ Funk, joined the team of judges to blind taste and vote on the best of the best cold climate wines.
This event is open to entries from around the world, but Minnesota wineries have been well-represented. About 325 wines entered this year, and many from our home state ranked well. Carlos Creek Winery took home more medals this year than ever before with 11 wines entered into the competition; all of them received a medal and six of them earned a gold!

Best of class award
On another exciting note, our 2021 Frontenac Gris (releasing May 27) earned the Best of Class Award in the ‘Other White’ category. The category was designed to recognize varieties of white wines including Frontenac Gris, Petit Ami, Edelweiss, and Swenson White among others.
Minnesota wine is looking good, and we’re so excited about how well our home state was represented. Our neighboring wineries – Burr Vineyards in Brandon, MN and Rolling Forks Vineyards in Glenwood, MN took home some awesome medals too, including Rolling Forks’ Best of Show Rosé win. Congratulations to all Minnesota wineries on making exceptional wines in our beautiful, unpredictable, and (sometimes but we won’t talk about that right now) cold state of Minnesota. We’re proud to be in such amazing company.
